WASHINGTON - The director of the US Central Intelligence Agency, John Brennan, said on Thursday there are tens of thousands of Islamic State fighters around the world, more than al-Qaida at its height.

He also told a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing the agency is very concerned about the growth of Libya as a base of operations for Islamic State, saying there are 5,000-8,000 fighters for the militant group there, although the numbers of its fighters in Iraq and Syria is down to 18,000 to 22,000 from 19,000 to 25,000.
