North Korea claimed overnight Monday that it now has the capability to strike the United States with a nuclear weapon, Channel 2 citing official Korean state news agency KNCA.

The statement came one day after North Korea fired a ballistic missile in defiance of calls to rein in its weapons program, South Korean and US officials said. The US Pacific Command said it was assessing the type of missile but it was "not consistent with an intercontinental ballistic missile." Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada said the missile could be of a new type.
