KABUL, Afghanistan — NATO says one of its service members has been killed in an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan.

An alliance statement says the death occurred Tuesday. It did not give a nationality or provide an exact location of the attack.

Violence in southern Afghanistan has risen in recent months as NATO and Afghan forces attempt to take control of the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar.

At least 45 NATO service members have been killed so far this month, and more than 2,000 have died since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion.

It has been the deadliest year for international forces in the nine-year Afghan conflict. Many of the casualties are caused by improvised bombs.
