The United States is training Syrian rebels and will offer the armed groups nonlethal assistance and equipment for the first time, the New York Times cited American administration officials as saying on Wednesday.

The scope of training and the country in which the training is based remain unknown.

US Secretary of State John Kerry is expected to offer nonlethal assistance in a meeting on Thursday in Rome with Syrian opposition leaders. The aid will include vehicles, communications equipment and night vision gear, according to the Times.
