No changes in parent’s payments to education system next yr

The Education Ministry announced on Monday at a meeting of the Knesset Education Committee that there would be no changes made to parents’ mandatory or optional payments for services offered by the school system for the upcoming 2013-2014 school year.
The Ministry also stated it would increase funding for students’ meal plans so that in the case where a student’s parents cannot afford to pay for the meal, the educational institution will be required to offer him a free one.
Minister of Education Shai Piron said during Monday’s meeting that the government should act to gradually abolish parents’ payments and ultimately provide completely free education in the school system.
Piron also reiterated his commitment to students from low socio-economic backgrounds and added that he aspires to “balance the desires of parents to enrich their children's education while preserving the principle of equality in education."
