Norway killer Breivik wins human rights case

A court has ruled that Norway violated mass killer Anders Breivik's human rights by keeping him in isolation in prison. Yiming Woo reports.

A state lawyer says he's surprised the Norwegian court ruled that Anders Breivik's human rights had been violated.

The ruling found the mass killer had been kept in a "completely locked world" during isolation, was subjected to strip searches and woken up hourly by guards.

The judge said the prohibition of "inhuman and degrading treatment" applies to everyone, including terrorists and killers.

Breivik's lawyer says his isolation must now be eased.

The state must pay over $40,000 to cover his legal fees, as well.

Breivik was convicted of killing 77 people in two attacks in 2011.

State lawyers say they will appeal.
