Obama: US canceling military exercise with Egpyt in wake of crackdown

US President Barack Obama condemned the Egyptian government's violent crackdown on Islamists which killed hundreds on Wednesday, saying that the US had informed Egypt that it was cancelling a bi-annual military exercise with the Egptian army scheduled for next month.

Obama called on the Egyptian authorities to "respect the universal rights" of the people and he called on protesters to act peacefully.The US president called on the government to immediately lift the state of emergency which it imposed on Wednesday.
