Columbus, Ohio police on Thursday shot and killed a man after they say he went into a Mediterranean restaurant and attacked five patrons with a machete, according to local media reports.

Police were called to the Nazareth Restaurant on the state capitol's northeast side at about 6 p.m. EST, according to the Columbus Dispatch newspaper. The suspect fled and police caught up with him about five miles away, the newspaper said.

The five injured people were taken to the hospital - one is in critical condition, according to WCMH, a local NBC television station.

A representative for the police was not immediately available for comment.
