One pilot was killed and others were wounded after separatists in Slovyansk in eastern Ukraine fired anti-aircraft missiles against Kiev forces, the Ukrainian interior minister said.

Pro-Russian separatists in Slovyansk said on Friday Ukrainian forces had launched a "large-scale operation" to retake the town.

Earlier, a Reuters photographer said he saw a military helicopter open fire on the outskirts of the town and a reporter heard gunfire.
