Within three weeks a Brazilian based pro Israel organization, AMISRAEL, was able to collect one million signatures from Latin American citizens of all persuasions demanding the release of captive Israel soldiers Gilad Schalit, who has been held by Hamas in Gaza for over four years.

The petitioners have called on former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who has connections to Iran, to become directly involved in efforts to free the young man.

Half a million signatures were collected from Mexico; followed by support from Columbia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela, Brazil, Guatemala, Argentina, Peru, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rice, Paraguay, Panama and Porto Rico.

The organizations plans to continue to collect signatures. It is also possible that the organization would ask Vice Premier Silvan Shalom to present the signatures to da Silva.
