The government of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday fired the Hamas mayor of a West Bank town.
Government officials cited mismanagement as the reason for Wajih Qawas's dismissal as mayor of Qalqilya.
Sunday's move, however, appeared to be part of Abbas's widening crackdown on the Hamas.
Abbas has decreed that Hamas mayors whose terms expire can be replaced. The mayors' terms in the towns of Nablus and Jenin are up in December.
