Palestinian prisoners' hunger strike ends after marathon negotiations

The Palestinian prisoners' hunger strike has ended, the Israel Prison Service said on Saturday.

The end of the strike came about after an agreement was reached between Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and the Red Cross over prisoner demands regarding visitation rights. As part of the agreement, prisoners will now get two family visits per month instead of one. The agreement came after a marathon of negotiations between all parties.

The hunger strike began on April 17 and involved nearly 1,580 prisoners. All prisoners have now ended the strike, according to the prison service. The strike's end comes right in time for the start of Ramadan.

The strike was led by Marwan Barghouti, who despite having been imprisoned since 2004 for a term of five life sentences, is seen as a possible contender to succeed Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
