Pentagon: Obama orders review of US aid to Egypt

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama has ordered a review of US assistance to Egypt's government, the Pentagon said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Given the events of last week, the President has directed relevant departments and agencies to review our assistance to the government of Egypt," the Pentagon statement said, without explicitly referring to last week's military-backed overthrow of Egypt's president. The slated US delivery of four F-16 fighter jets to Egypt in the coming weeks was still "scheduled as planned," a senior US official told Reuters on Wednesday, after the Pentagon made its announcement.

The US official spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.
