President Shimon Peres returned to Israel on Thursday afternoon from an official visit in Italy, where he met with the Italian president and the prime minister in Rome, and with Pope Francis in the Vatican.

"I return to Israel with the knowledge that the State of Israel has a true friend in the Vatican and in the Italian leadership," Peres said.

He expressed confidence the Israeli-Italian relations will continue to deepen in the year to come.
