President Shimon Peres insisted on Wednesday that the United States' only interest in promoting peace in the region is to bolster free democracy.

"The US is here without interest. What interest could it have, except supporting free democracy?" he said at an event marking 50 years to the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS).

"[US President Barack] Obama is doing all he can to help us militarily and intelligence-wise. He went as far as vetoing a UN resolution condemning the Israeli settlements, even though he objects to them. We're fighting on the same front," the president added.
