Former president Shimon Peres was set to meet with Pope Francis at the Vatican on Thursday.

Peres will update the Pontiff on the security situation between Israel and the Palestinians in the aftermath of Operation Protective Edge in Gaza.

The two were also slated to discuss plans to advance peace in the Middle East and the new extremist elements in the region that perpetrate terrorist acts in the name of religion.
