The police have asked Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit for permission to question Zionist Union leader Isaac Herzog under caution and turn an initial probe of alleged campaign fundraising violations into a full-fledged investigation, Channel 2 reported Monday.

The probe has been looking into whether Herzog violated the law when he ran for leader of the Labor Party in 2013 against incumbent Shelly Yacimovich. Herzog's campaign manager in that race, Shimon Batat, has already been questiond under caution.

A source close to Herzog responded that he has not been called in for questioning. The source said the police had made their request to Mandelblit a few days sgo,

A police official said Monday night that she could neither confirm nor deny the Channel 2 report. She added that police will make an official announcement if and when Herzog is questioned under caution, like they are expected to do any time a public official undergoes such questioning with police.

Herzog's associates said he would cooperate with law enforcement authorities. when he returns from an official visit to Germany.

The Movement for Quality Government has asked police to investigate a separate incident involving Batat in which he attempted to create a high-paying post in the World Zionist Executive for himself and to buy off potential opponents.
