Police crackdown on illegal workers, nab suspected head of Beduin trafficking ring

The police announced the arrest of a man suspected of managing an extensive network of illegal workers across the country’s South on Monday. The suspect, 25, is a resident of Lakiya, north of Beersheba. Police arrested the man several days ago and his remand was extended; on Monday charges were filed in the Beersheba District Court.

According to a police statement, several arrests of illegal workers over the past week near Rahat and of illegal Palestinian workers from the West Bank were related. Police believe that the suspect coordinated the entry of illegal workers with a Palestinian contact in the West Bank.

The suspect is believed to have organized busloads of illegal workers from the West Bank. The bus drivers were arrested and charged with transporting illegal workers.

Police have sought to crack down on the phenomenon of illegal workers in Israel. Numerous businesses in the South have been shut down for employing illegal workers. A supermarket in Beersheba was closed in July and the store manger detained by police after employing illegal workers.

In late July, 27 illegal residents from Hebron were arrested after they had established a makeshift camp outside of Tel Aviv.
