Poultry inspector succumbs to wounds after hit-and-run in South

An inspector from the Egg and Poultry board hurt in a hit-and-run accident in southern Israel died of his wounds Monday morning, Southern District police reported.

The inspector was taking part in a stake-out of a driver suspected of transporting illegal eggs and chicken on a stretch of road between Mount Amsha and the community of Shani in the south Hebron Hills region. When the inspector ordered the driver to stop he was struck by the vehicle, after which the driver fled the scene.

Police said Monday they view the incident with the utmost severity, and have tasked the special investigations branch with finding the driver. On Monday they also secured a gag order on the specifics of the investigation.
