Fatah on Monday condemned a Hamas and Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) leader for siding with opposition forces fighting against President Bashar Assad in Syria's raging conflict, Palestinian news agency Ma'an reported.

Palestinaian parliamentary speaker, Aziz Dweik expressed the body's support for the Syrian rebels in an interview with Algerian daily Echorouk, according to Ma'an, saying that support for forces opposing the Damascus regime took precedent over the Palestinian plight against Israel.

Ma'an cited Fatah spokesman Ahmad Assaf, as criticizing Dweik's statements, calling them harmful to "the higher Palestinian interest."

"Involving the Palestinian people and their national plight in the internal conflicts of Arab countries will cause the most serious harm to our national project," he was quoted as saying.
