Report: Network of four suspected of selling IDF recruits' personal data

The Privacy Protection Authority revealed on Sunday it located four people, two civilians and two IDF soldiers, who used the personal information of hundreds of thousands of conscripts gathered by Meitav, the IDF unit which processes personal information and places recruits in their respective units.

Allegedly, the suspects gathered information on people born between 1988-1993 and used that information to offer the unsuspecting individuals services and products masking the real identity of those offering by pretending they were from a "Center for Discharged Soldiers."

They then allegedly sold the data to third parties.

Head of the Privacy Protection Authority Alon Bachar stated that when people are obliged to hand over personal details, and do not give that information willingly, the body controlling the data has "an increased public duty to guard their privacy."
