KABUL, Afghanistan — An Afghan official says a roadside bombing has killed seven civilians in the southern province of Zabul on Friday.

Mohammad Jan Rasoolyar, spokesman for the provincial governor, said the seven were all taxi drivers and had been in a car on a highway when they were detained by a group of insurgents.

He said the men negotiated their release from the militants, but as they drove away, the militants detonated a roadside bomb by remote control, killing all seven men in the car.

The volatile province of Zabul lies just north of Kandahar, a traditional Taliban stronghold.
