Russia outlines response to US missile shield

MOSCOW - Russia will equip long-range missiles with warheads capable of foiling a US anti-missile shield in Europe and may deploy additional arms in its western and southern regions, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Wednesday.
Medvedev lamented that talks on cooperation with the United States and NATO on a European missile defense have not produced agreement and outlined a response to US plans to deploy anti-missile shield in Europe by 2020.
The United States says the shield is needed to protect against potential threats from nations such as Iran, but Russian officials say it could weaken the nuclear arsenal Russia relies upon for security.
