Russian envoy says not time for Syria sanctions

UNITED NATIONS - Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said on Tuesday that Moscow did not think it was time to impose sanctions on Syria over its harsh five-month crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators.
Western nations on the UN Security Council say they are drafting a sanctions resolution. But Russia is one of five countries with the power to veto a resolution.
Asked as he was going into a regular Security Council meeting whether it was time for sanctions on Syria, Churkin told reporters, "No, we don't think so."
