Spain intends to recognize a Palestinian state prior to September, senior Fatah official Nabil Shaath was quoted by Palestinian news agency WAFA as saying on Monday.

Shaath released a statement following a meeting with Consular General of Spain in east Jerusalem Alfonso Portable, saying that the diplomat insisted that his country will agree on the membership of Palestine in the United Nations and will urge European countries to do the same.

The Fatah official said that further efforts would be made to gain international support for a sovereign Palestinian state next September.
