Sixteen Hamas activists were arrested in east Jerusalem over the last few weeks in a joint Shin Bet and Jerusalem Police operation, the Shin Bet said.

The security forces uncovered a significant infrastructure of the Islamist group in the capital. Some of the activists arrested were part of the senior command involved in directing and funding the group in Jerusalem and on the Temple Mount and worked to strengthen its profile among residents.

Activists of northern branch of the Islamic Movement who were working together with Hamas in the capital were also arrested in the operation.
