Soldiers patrol streets in Brazilian city after 100 killed during police strike

Soldiers are patrolling the streets of Vitoria in Brazil's Espirito Santo state amidst a spike in murders after police walking off the job to demand a wage increase.

More than 100 people have been reported killed during a six-day strike by police in the Brazilian state of Espirito Santo, as hundreds of troops patrolled streets attempting to keep order with schools and businesses closed and public transport frozen.

The Army mobilised airborne troops and armoured vehicles on Thursday (February 09) to reinforce roughly 1,200 soldiers and federal police trying to contain the chaos in Espirito Santo, a coastal state north of Rio de Janeiro.

Despite the military presence, some locals have decided to leave the city.
