Steven Spielberg has found his next film: he’ll direct for Amblin Entertainment The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara, an adaptation of the 1997 book by Pulitzer Prize-winner David Kertzer.
Adapted for the screen by Tony Kushner (Lincoln, Munich, Angels In America), The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara tells the story of a young Jewish boy in Bologna, Italy, in 1858 who is forcibly taken from his family to be raised as a Christian after it’s discovered he had been secretly baptized. Mortara’s parents’ struggle to free their son becomes a part of a much larger political battle which pits the papacy against the forces of democracy and Italian unification.
Spielberg will once again reunite with British actor Mark Rylance (following Bridge Of Spies
and The BFG
), this time in the role of pope Pius IX.
Spielberg is certainly keeping busy as he is currently working on science- fiction film Ready Player One
, which is based on Ernest Cline’s best-selling book. The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara
will go into production early next year.
