Syria wants Turkey to mediate talks with Israel

DAMASCUS, Syria — Syria wants Turkey to mediate its indirect peace talks with Israel and any other efforts would be subordinate to the Turkish role.
Ankara mediated several rounds of indirect negotiations between the Mideast rivals in 2008 but the talks made no significant headway and were suspended following Israel's military offensive in Gaza the following year.
Israeli-Turkish relations worsened, however, in the wake of the Gaza war and have practically broken down after Israel's deadly commando raid in May on a Turkish-led flotilla trying to breach the blockade in Gaza.
Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said Sunday any new indirect talks should be mediated by Turkey and must resume from the point where they left off.
