Troops loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad, backed by Hezbollah fighters, launched an attack on rebel-held town Qusayr on Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told AFP.

"The assault on Qusayr has started. There is fierce fighting between rebels and the army around the entrances to the town," Syrian Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

"Soldiers and tanks are trying to advance into the town, the rebel forces are attempting to push them back," he added.
