Turkey's military said Friday it was planning to spend $1 billion (â‚¬680 million) on four long-range missile defense systems. Brig. Gen. Metin Gurak, the Turkish military spokesman, said the procurement was not directed at any specific country. Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu denied media reports that Turkey was buying missile interceptors against Iran. Friday's announcement comes a day after US President Barack Obama canceled a long-planned missile shield for Eastern Europe, replacing a Bush-era project that was opposed by Russia with a plan he contended would better defend against Iranian missiles. The Defense Ministry said Chinese, Russian and American companies have been invited to present proposals.
