Turkish FM supports Iranian mediation in regional unrest

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu met with his Iranian counterpart, Ali Akbar Salehi, in Tehran on Monday and called on regional rulers facing popular uprisings as part of the Arab Spring to consult with Tehran regarding their options. Davutoglu mentioned specifically the current uprisings in Yemen, Bahrain, and Libya.

"We hope that the political developments of the region will result in stability of the region and the ruling systems would pay heed to people's legitimate demands for reforms," he said.

Earlier on Monday Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad discussed his readiness to help resolve the unrest in Bahrain, but insisted that Iran had not yet involved itself in the turmoil. "Had Iran wanted to interfere in regional affairs, the entire region would have been affected," he said.

The Sunni monarchy of Bahrain has faced popular uprisings from the majority Shi'a population since the middle of February.
