UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he was deeply concerned by the surge of violence in Israel and the West Bank.

"Violence only deepens distrust," while distancing the prospect of peace between Israelis and Palestinians, he said in a statement Tuesday. Ban called on all sides to show restraint so as to "avoid further exacerbating an already tense environment" and gave his condolences to the families of the victims.
