According to a New York Times report The United States will place defensive missiles in the Persian Gulf for protection in the event of an Iranian attack, in part to protect , Army Radio reported Saturday night. US naval vessels will also be placed near the Iranian coast. American officials apparently told the Times that the move was accelerated for fears of an Iranian response to the West’s intent to impose additional sanctions. The officials added that the missile defense battery is also meant to calm and reassure it that there is no immediate need to attack ’s nuclear sites.
