‘Up punishment against animal cruelty’

Irin Anver-Eisenberg, the state attorney for the Haifa District, sent a request on Wednesday to the prosecutorial authorities within the Israel Police, the Environmental Protection Ministry, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority and the Agriculture Ministry to raise the level of punishment for abuse and cruelty to animals, and to petition, as a rule, for prison sentences in these cases.
“Of late we are exposed again and again to grave deeds of abuse to animals, whether they are performed by minors in the summer or by normative adults with no criminal past, when the act is presented as a ‘reckless act without careful thought,’” Anver-Eisenberg wrote. “Sometimes these things are even documented and distributed socially as an act of ‘humor.’”
