US President Barack Obama addressed the nation on Wednesday night, laying out his strategy to fight off the Islamic State terror group. He told the American people that IS was not "Islamic," as no religion "condones the killing of innocents," and a majority of the group's victims have been Muslim.
"It is recognized by no government," the president said, "nor the people it subjugates. ISIL is a terrorist organization – pure and simple."
Obama said the terrorist organization poses a threat to the people of Iraq and Syria and the broader Middle East as well as to American citizens, personnel and facilities.
He assured the nation that Islamic State would be met with strength and resolve.
