White House to create monument to gay rights

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama is set to declare the first national monument recognizing the contributions of the U.S. gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, the Washington Post said on Tuesday.

The monument would designate a sliver of green space and part of the surrounding Greenwich Village neighborhood in New York City as the birthplace of America's modern gay liberation movement, the Post said. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
