Former Shas chairman Eli Yishai informed the party's spiritual mentor Rabbi Ovadia Yosef Sunday night that he would not accept his offer to head the Shas education system El Hamaayan.

Yosef asked Yishai to head El Hamaayan as a consolation prize after he decided to reinstate MK Arye Deri as Shas' leader. But after Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein ruled Sunday that Yishai would have to quit the Knesset to head El Hamaayan, he decided to remain an MK.

Yishai is also expected to turn down a request from activists loyal to him to run in the October 22 race for mayor of Jerusalem.
