* The University of Haifa, in association with the Society for the Advancement of Democracy in the Arab Sector in Israel, the Department of Government in the School of Political Science, the Jewish Arab Center and the Druze Sector and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation will host a symposium on the impact of the elections to the 17th Knesset on the Arab community of Israel: estimates and chances. The symposium will take place from 1 p.m. in the Interdisciplinary Building on the University of Haifa campus.
* Root and Branch is hosting an evening in honor of the late Ka'are Kristiansen who would have been 86 years old this Saturday, March 11. Kristiansen, who died last year, resigned from the Norwegian Nobel Committee when it awarded the peace prize to Yasser Arafat in December 1994. Kristiansen was a member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, president of the Norwegian parliament, Norwegian minister of oil and energy, and founding chairman of the Jerusalem Embassy Initiative (established 1995). The lecture in his memory will be delivered by Moshe Aumann at 7:30 p.m. at the Israel Center, 22 Keren Hayesod, Jerusalem. The theme of the lecture is "Who's afraid of the churches? Christians Jews and Israel." A number of leading figures from Israel and abroad will participate in the tributes to Kristiansen, including Nobel Prize Laureate Prof. Yisrael (Robert) Aumann. Sunday, March 12 * A national action plan to "Free Israel of Drugs" will be formulated at a conference on narcotics abuse at the David Intercontinental Hotel, Tel Aviv, commencing 8 a.m. The opening address will be delivered by Ronny Douek, chairman of the Israel Anti-Drug and Alcohol Authority. * Dr. Christoph Grunenberg, director Tate-Liverpool and Prof. Dr. Antje von Graevenitz of the University of Cologne, Germany, will be among the guest speakers at Shenkar College's third annual two-day conference "Between Sderot and Tel Aviv," which will examine central and peripheral regions in Israel. Grunenberg will speak about "Liverpool: A real periphery?" The Tate Liverpool is the UK's largest modern art gallery outside London.

Wednesday, March 29 * Metuna, the organization that works towards the prevention of road accidents, is holding its seventh conference and the third in memory of Anthony Harris at the Dead sea Meridien Hotel. Titled a "Thinking out of the Box" conference, it invites participants to share their thoughts on how to prevent road injury by changing attitudes.
The conference will take a fresh look at the failure of Israel society to reduce road death and serious injury and why solutions which work in the majority of western countries are not adopted here.
Participants will explore the reasons why society is seemingly resigned to the inevitable devastation of so many families every year. Within the framework of the three-day conference, Metuna will create a dialogue with media representatives, psychologists and public health officials who deal with trauma and the aftermath of vehicle collisions. Other participants in the dialogue will be families of victims and survivors of motor vehicle accidents.
