A Palestinian suspected of throwing rocks has been shot dead by an IDF soldier near the Beit El settlement, north of Ramallah on Monday evening.
The IDF has launched an investigation into the incident.
According to initial information available to the army, two Palestinians hurled rocks at an Israeli car and bus traveling on Route 60 in the West Bank between the Beit El and Ofra settlements.
Soldiers arrived on the scene. One of the Palestinians fled and the other was shot dead by a soldier.
Initial assessments by army sources are that the soldiers’ lives were not at risk during the incident and the IDF is investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
The area is prone to frequent rock throwing by Palestinians at Israeli vehicles.
According to B’Tselem the Palestinian who was killed was Saaji Darwish, of the village of Beitin, located just outside of Ramallah.
Peace Now called on the IDF to fully investigate the incident to determine if Darwish had truly posed a danger to the soldiers in a way that justified the use of live ammunition.
The procedure should be to arrest him and not to kill him without a trial, Peace Now said.
