2 boats of migrants from north Africa reach Spain, 1 man dies

More than 100 migrants reached Spain after a treacherous journey from northwest Africa, but one man died en route, officials said Sunday. The Interior Ministry said the Coast Guard towed a boat containing 69 men into the Canary Islands port of Arguineguin in the early hours of Sunday. A ministry spokesman said emergency workers found one man was dead and two others had to be given medical treatment. The cause of death was not given. Red Cross spokesman Andres Ramirez said another vessel was intercepted on Sunday morning by the Civil Guard off Tarifa, the mainland's southernmost tip. He says the boat contained 18 men and 18 women and all are in good health. Every year thousands of people seeking a better life try to make the hazardous crossing from Africa to Spain.
