Police have detained nine people suspected of mailing anonymous death threat letters stuffed with bullets to top French politicians, including President Nicolas Sarkozy, a law enforcement official said Thursday. The nine men were detained in the southern Herault region. The suspects include a former soldier who had already been detained in connection with the case in August, the official said. It was not immediately clear why he was arrested a second time. The official was spoke on condition of anonymity, in accordance with police policy. Starting in late 2008, politicians including Sarkozy and some of his ministers, members of Parliament and local officials have received threatening letters, some with disjointed messages addressed to "purveyors of freedom-killing and fascist laws." The letters each contained a 9mm or .38-caliber bullet inside.
