A young girl was near death after a man threw her 58 meters from a bridge into a river on Thursday in Australia's second largest city, police said.
Water police used a boat to rescue the girl, aged about 5, around 15 minutes after witnesses reported seeing her thrown from the busy West Gate Bridge in Melbourne, police spokeswoman Mia Paterson said.
"Witnesses have told police that a man was seen driving along the inbound lane of the West Gate Freeway when, just near the top of the bridge, the car stopped and it is believed the young child was thrown over," Paterson said.
The girl was flown by helicopter to a Melbourne hospital with "life threatening injuries," she said.
