Cuban foreign minister: US embargo biggest obstacle for recovery

US trade sanctions were the biggest obstacle to recovery from hurricanes Ike and Gustav, Cuba's foreign minister said on Thursday. Felipe Perez Roque said Cuba could recover if sanctions were eased even for just six months. He was talking to reporters Thursday about Cuba's annual resolution to condemn the American embargo at the upcoming US General Assembly. This year's assembly vote is scheduled for Oct. 29. The world body has sided with Cuba for the past 16 years in calling for the embargo to be lifted. Cuba said Ike and Gustav caused US$5 million damage this month, but the embargo has been far more damaging, adding up to US$93 billion over nearly five decades.
