France detains man linked to Afghan jihadist cell

French authorities have detained a suspect accused of participating in a recruitment ring for fighters against the Western-backed government of Afghanistan, a judicial official said Monday. An anti-terrorism judge issued preliminary charges against the 29-year-old suspect for alleged "criminal association with a terrorist enterprise" and ordered him locked up, the judicial official said. The man was arrested Thursday in the southeastern city of Grenoble on suspicion of links to an Internet site in Belgium aimed at recruiting jihadists to send to Afghanistan, the official said on condition of anonymity in accordance with official policy. According to investigators, at least two people used information on the site to travel to Afghanistan, the official said.
