Indictment deadline extended for Madoff accountant

A Manhattan judge on Monday gave prosecutors and defense attorneys more time to work out a possible plea deal for convicted pyramid schemer Bernard Madoff's longtime accountant.
An order signed by the judge extended the deadline for the government to bring an indictment against David Friehling to June 17. The order said both sides requested more time for "additional discussions regarding a possible disposition of this case."
Friehling was arrested in March on fraud charges for allegedly failing to make the basic auditing checks that would have exposed Madoff's epic pyramid scheme.
The 49-year-old is the only other person charged so far in the case besides Madoff, who has pleaded guilty. Prosecutors allege the accountant essentially rubber-stamped the disgraced financier's books for 17 years.
