In an interview with the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) News on Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi condemned the arrest of Marzieh Hashemi, an anchor for Iran's Press TV.
Qassemi said the treatment of Hashemi, a Muslim African-American woman, was "a blatant violation of human rights and shows the US government does not adhere to any of the principles it uses as pretexts to attack its critics."
He said Iran demanded that Hashemi be provided her basic human rights and be "immediately and unconditionally" released.
Hashemi, born Melanie Franklin, was arrested on Sunday upon arriving in St Louis, Missouri to visit family after living in Iran for years. The FBI has so far refused to comment on the case.
