Japan approves extension of anti-terror naval mission

Japan approved legislation to extend a refueling mission in support of US-led anti-terror operations in the Indian Ocean for another year on Friday.
The parliamentary approval allows Japan's navy to continue the mission until January 2010.
The refueling operation began in 2001, initially to support US-led forces in Afghanistan. After a brief interval due to its rejection by the opposition bloc, the mission is now limited to refueling vessels making anti-terrorism patrols in the Indian Ocean.
