Turkish court charges more suspects in pro-secular coup plot

A Turkish court on Wednesday formally charged dozens of new suspects including former generals, policemen, politicians and prominent journalists in connection with an alleged plot to topple Turkey's Islamic-rooted government.
Fifty-six more suspects face charges of membership in an alleged pro-secular and nationalists network called Ergenekon, the Istanbul anti-terror court said. Charges in the new indictment include obtaining classified documents, possession of weapons and illegal wiretapping.
A total of 219 suspects are on trial in the case seen as a struggle for control in Turkey between the Islamic-rooted government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and those who consider themselves the protectors of Turkey's secular system.
