Two arrested in German suspected right-wing stabbing of police chief

German authorities have arrested two people in the near-fatal stabbing of a city police chief in a suspected right-wing attack. Police said Monday that the two were arrested based on a description given by the victim, police chief Alois Mannichl, who had led a crackdown on far-right activities in the southern city of Passau. Mannichl was stabbed in the chest Saturday and authorities say the knife missed his heart by less than an inch (2 cm). The 52-year-old underwent emergency surgery and is now stable. No immediate details were given on the suspects who were arrested in the Passau area. State prosecutor Helmut Walch said at the weekend that the stabber was a skinhead who said "greetings from the national resistance you leftist pig" as he attacked Mannichl.
